Living Beyond Cancer
Mary Hoisington
As Mary Hoisington sat in the hospital awaiting surgery for her breast cancer in 1979, she had an unexpected visitor. A woman from the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery program came in fresh off the golf course to offer the kind of support that only another survivor can give. Mary doesn't remember what she said, but she does remember the feeling of strength that it gave her to see a healthy athletic woman on the other side of breast cancer.
Inspired to give back and show others that living beyond cancer is not only possible but essential, Mary went on to become a certified Reach to Recovery volunteer, which was just the beginning of her efforts. In addition to leading support groups and peer-to-peer outreach, Mary and a group of her friends recognized a dire need for financial support for many cancer patients in their area. In 2000, the group formed the Lamoille Area Cancer Network and by 2006 they were raising enough money to give more than $150,000 in grants to hundreds of cancer patients in financial crisis.
