Strengthening Your Resolve
Patti O'Brien, MD

When Dr. Patti O'Brien was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, her main concern was living to raise her two young children. She focused on that goal throughout her cancer journey, and openly discusses how her own treatment choices have been dictated by her determination to be there for her family. Support groups in the living room, dinner table discussions about the difficult choices cancer patients have to make, and volunteering at events were all part of growing up in the O'Brien family, who were especially proud to see Emma, the youngest, graduate from high school this year.

Filled with boundless energy and an unwavering commitment to personally touching the lives of others, O'Brien widely shares her own breast cancer experience and is deeply involved with many events and initiatives that support not only breast cancer patients, but also their families. In 2001, she helped start the Stowe Weekend of Hope, an annual national event that celebrates survivorship. She hosted the first Breast Cancer Conference in 1997 and has co-chaired each year. She is co-founder of the Cancer Patient Support Program Emergency Fund as well as the Breast Cancer Network in Vermont, and is also active with the VT-NH Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
